New CollegeSavings.org Web Site Makes it Easy to Find, View and Compare Information about 529 Plans

Jackson, Miss (March 27, 2007) –State Treasurer Tate Reeves is encouraging Mississippi families to take advantage of a redesigned College Savings Web site that is formatted to help families prepare for the growing financial challenge of a college education.

The College Savings Plan Network (CSPN) – a national non-profit association which is a division of the National Association of State Treasurers that was established to make education more obtainable – launched an enhanced Web site at CollegeSavings.org.

“It is essential that every child has the opportunity to have their educational dream come true,” said Treasurer Tate Reeves, president of the National Association of State Treasurers.  “By starting to save now, parents are ensuring that their child has the chance to make the dream of a college education a reality.”

Visitors to CSPN’s newly redesigned Web site can take advantage of a number of enhancements that make information gathering fast and intuitive. For those just beginning the process, CollegeSavings.org offers a strong investor education feature called The 529 Classroom. This special section explores the importance of saving for college and provides useful information about 529 plans. Visitors can quickly get up-to-speed through a series of frequently asked questions and other resources.

Mississippi has two college savings programs.  Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (MPACT) is a prepaid plan that is guaranteed by the state to cover the costs of college tuition and mandatory fees at Mississippi’s public colleges. Mississippi Affordable College Savings (MACS) is an investment trust plan that allows families to save for their child’s college tuition as well as related expenses such as books, supplies, fees, and certain room and board expenses. Mississippi families with newborn children still have the opportunity to start saving now for rising tuition rates.  Newborn enrollment for MPACT is open anytime before the newborns first birthday.  For additional information regarding College Savings Mississippi visit online at collegesavingsmississippi.com or call (601) 359- 5255.

“CollegeSavings.org has been designed to provide families an easy way to view and compare college savings plans,” Reeves said. “I encourage all Mississippi families to take advantage of this opportunity.”

To round out the site, CollegeSavings.org offers a host of information, including downloadable literature, relevant news articles and links to government and non-profit sites. The Additional Resources section is packed with a variety of third-party resources that are free to visitors.
