STATE TREASURER TATE REEVES AWARDS
ONE YEAR OF FREE COLLEGE TUITION

(Jackson, Mississippi) – State Treasurer Tate Reeves presented a check today for $4,942 to Karla Tate, of Kosciusko, who won a free year of senior college tuition for her son.

“Nearly 4,400 Mississippians entered our online tuition drawing, and I am pleased that we have the opportunity to provide this family with a gift that will pay huge dividends,” said Reeves. “One way you can help secure your child’s future is through planning for their college education today.”

Tate is a school teacher at Kosciusko Middle Elementary School and already has Mississippi Prepaid Affordable College Tuition (MPACT) accounts for her two young sons. She plans to use the one year of free college tuition for her older son who aspires to be a paleontologist.  

“We were thrilled to receive such wonderful news,” said Tate. “Saving for college has been a priority for our family and this gift will help us obtain our college savings goals.”

MPACT allows families to lock-in today’s college tuition prices regardless of future tuition increases.

“Making higher education more affordable and accessible for all Mississippians is essential for providing increased opportunities for our children,” said Reeves. “With the financial markets struggling, there is no better way to invest your money than by buying an MPACT contract now.”

There are two College Savings Mississippi plans administered by the Office of the State Treasurer – MPACT and MACS. MPACT earnings are exempt from Federal and State income tax. It also qualifies for the Federal Gift tax advantages. In addition, the purchaser is able to claim a tax deduction from Mississippi Income Tax.
